OUR RATING
Mariannhill monastery is an architectural masterpiece and a popular Durban tourist attraction. It was established by Franz Pfanner, a Trappist monk, in 1882. This was founded to promote the integration of the native Zulu people in the white society of the Transkei Region. It’s a must see for anyone visiting Durban as it’s ranked by visitors as one of the best architectural and religious Durban attractions that there are.
The trappist monks are a contemplative Roman Catholic religious order following the rule of St Benedict. They speak only when necessary and idle talk is highly discouraged. The silence is not a restriction however, but rather a wish to give space to what matters.
The Chapel is a centerpiece of the Monastery. Rays of the sun pierce the handmade stained-glass windows and bounce from the ceilings filled with frescos. It feels like you are stepping back in time to the durban of long ago. The peace and serenity in the precinct is tangible. The architecture is conducive to the mass and various music recitals taking place making it a magical and enjoyable experience. Memories that will last for a lifetime.
There’s a lovely tea garden, you can enjoy a delicious lunch, the menu ranges from light snacks to heavier meals, sit in the garden and relax to the ambient sounds of monks chanting in the background. The tables are artfully set in the shade of giant Umukhulu trees. It’s heavenly to sit in these peaceful surroundings and enjoy this amazing place in all its majesty. Durban at its very best.
The monastery is also well known for its organic produce including milk, cheese and yogurt made by the monks themselves. They also have a traditional color hand printing workshop and create colorful handcrafted garments there.
So come and enjoy the beauty and the glory of one of Durban’s most famous tourist attractions and enjoy the amazing organic products they create there. It’s a must see for anyone who can appreciate a serenely holy place beating to the drum of ancient traditions and religious fervor.
