Gandhi arrived in Durban, South Africa in 1893 to work as a legal representative for an Indian trading firm. He faced discrimination and racism. Gandhi began to actively advocate for the rights of Indian immigrants in South Africa. He founded the Natal Indian Congress in 1984 to fight against discriminatory laws.
At the Gandhi settlement you can see Gandhi’s house Sarvodaya, the printing press building and the Phoenix interpretation center. There are several exhibits dedicated to him, his wife Kasturba and other leaders of the anti-apartheid movement.
