Visiting the I ♥ Market has become a beloved tradition for our team, a ritual that perfectly encapsulates the essence of the Durban Vibe. In it’s new location at Northlands Primary School in Durban North, this monthly market is a treasure trove of creativity, culture, and community spirit. I ♥ Market takes place on the first Saturday of every month from 9am to 2pm.

The history of  I ♥ Market (written as I Heart Market)  is a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit and artistic flair that defines Durban. Launched in 2008, this market was initially a small gathering of local artisans and food vendors. Over the years, it has blossomed into one of the best attractions in Durban, drawing crowds from all over the city and beyond. It’s a vibrant showcase of Durban’s multiculturalism, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds to celebrate the city’s rich tapestry of talent.

One of the main reasons we love the I ♥ Market is its support for local artisans and performance artists. Walking through the market, you’re greeted by a dazzling array of stalls offering unique, handmade products. From bespoke jewellery and stylish clothing to quirky home décor and organic skincare products, each item tells a story of passion and craftsmanship. For instance, the stunning ceramics from Muddylane or the vibrant prints from Durban designer Pow Wow (Indigenous wears by Cree/Nakoda designer Faith Starlight) are always a hit. These stalls not only provide a platform for local creators to thrive but also embody the Durban Vibe, celebrating free speech and equality through art.

The food stalls are another highlight, offering a culinary journey that reflects Durban’s cultural diversity. Whether you’re in the mood for traditional South African fare, vegan delights, or exotic international cuisine, the market caters to all tastes. We never miss out on the delicious offerings from Sizzling Tikka or the artisanal cheeses from Gourmet Greek. The communal seating areas invite you to relax, enjoy your meal, and soak up the lively atmosphere.

In addition to the artisan stalls and food vendors, the market also features live music and performances, adding to the festive spirit. Local musicians and performers often take to the stage, providing a platform for emerging talents and enriching the cultural experience. This blend of shopping, dining, and entertainment makes the I Heart Market a microcosm of the Durban Vibe.

After exploring the market, we often head to nearby restaurants to continue our culinary adventure. Have you tried the delightful dishes at Circus Circus Café? Or perhaps a visit to Café Jiran for some exquisite coffee and pastries? Both of these spots are within 500m of the market and come highly recommended.

So our final thoughts? The I Heart Market is more than just a shopping destination; it’s a celebration of Durban’s vibrant cultural scene and a crucial part of the Durban Vibe. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, make sure to add this market to your itinerary and experience one of the best attractions in Durban.
