OUR OPINION
Berea, Durban
Situated in a charming conservatory between two listed buildings, the Antique Café in Morningside is an enchanting spot that we frequent regularly. Owned by the delightful duo, Stefano and Terri-Anne Toffoli, this fully Halal café offers a whimsical, bohemian-vintage atmosphere. Imagine a space with pastel green distressed walls, ornate trimmings, and the smell of freshly baked pastries wafting through the air. The Durban Vibe, with its rich cultural fusion and creativity, is epitomised in this delightful venue. The coffee is the best and the food is on another level.
We can recommend a few firm favourites of ours from their eclectic fusion menu. The Antique Breakfast, with its perfectly cooked eggs, tender lamb rashers, and grilled mushrooms, is a hearty start to any day and sets us up nicely most mornings. At lunchtime try the Panko Crumbed Chicken Fillet, paired with fresh avocado, tomato, and their beautifully tangy prego sauce, is a crunchy delight that always satisfies. For a taste of the exotic, the Slow Cooked Moroccan Spice Lamb Flatbread, topped with fresh rocket and minted yoghurt, offers a burst of flavours that transport us straight to North Africa.
Vegetarians are not left out with their amazing Battered Aubergine, served with creamy jalapeno sauce and roasted nuts, making for a scrumptious option. And no visit is complete without indulging in the Baby Bee Sting, a soft chiffon sponge filled with crème patisserie and topped with a honey and nut caramel – a true piece of heaven. It’s worth going there just for this and the aromatic fresh coffee they are famous for.
What truly makes Antique Café stand out among the best restaurants in Durban is its commitment to fresh, high-quality ingredients and its vibrant, creative cuisine. This place is a quintessential part of the Durban Vibe, reflecting the city’s multiculturalism and culinary innovation.
While you’re in the area, why not explore some nearby attractions? The beautiful Mitchell Park with its famous Zoo is just a short stroll away, perfect for a leisurely walk after a satisfying meal. Or visit the Phansi Museum, which showcases fascinating local art and culture. These spots are all within 500 metres and well worth the visit.
So our final thoughts? Antique Café is more than just a café; it’s an experience that encapsulates the essence of Durban’s creative and culinary spirit. Whether you’re looking for a charming spot to relax or to explore the best of Durban’s food scene, this café should be at the top of your list.
It’s our favourite Bohemian cafe and if you’re visiting a Durban attraction nearby, you should go and find out why we Durbanites love it so much.
