OUR RATING
If you are a Durbanite, then you have heard of the Musgrave Market and have probably visited it once or twice. The market is situated on Stephen Dlamini Road in Berea and has heaps of traders. You will find things from food to clothing to books to plants. The Musgrave Market stands as a testament to Durban’s rich cultural tapestry and is a pivotal part of the Durban Vibe. Every Saturday we’re always there, immersing ourselves in the colourful array of stalls that celebrate the city’s unique spirit.
Set in a picturesque park on the tree-lined avenue of Stephen Dlamini (Essenwood) Road, the Musgrave Market has become a popular Saturday morning outing for the Durban community. This market is more than just a marketplace; it’s a hub of cultural fusion, where the creative and spiritual heartbeat of Durban pulses strongly. The vibrant atmosphere is palpable, with an eclectic mix of music, art, fashion, performance, and cuisine on display.
Our good friend. Market manager Melissa Ketley, shared that when the market began in January 2019, it was a small market with about 20 vendors. Today, the Musgrave Market hosts about 100 vendors each week, including permanent vendors who have been with the market for years and some who set up their stalls on a week-to-week basis. This diversity ensures there is always someone new, selling something different every week.
Every visit to the Musgrave Market feels like a new adventure. The market’s history is deeply rooted in supporting local artisans and performers, providing them with a platform to showcase their talents. This support aligns seamlessly with the essence of the Durban Vibe, making it a crucial part of the city’s cultural fabric. From intricately designed jewellery to bespoke clothing and organic skincare products, there is something for everyone.
The food court is a highlight, offering a wide array of options like burgers, shawarmas, and Korean fried chicken, all enjoyed while listening to live music. Local musicians like Nathaniel Doorsamy and Ashleigh J. bring the market to life with their talents. This commitment to free speech and equality through art and performance is another reason why the Musgrave Market is considered one of the best attractions in Durban.
Children can enjoy horse and pony rides, mini fire engine rides, a jumping castle, and a kids’ playground. For those interested in a bit of pampering, there are henna art stations, angel card readings, and a nail and eyelash bar. The variety of stalls is impressive, offering everything from locally produced unique items to antiques and collectibles.
Within a 500-metre radius of the market, there are several excellent restaurants that you should definitely visit. Have you tried the fusion cuisine at The Little India, or the contemporary dishes at Olive & Oil? Both offer delightful dining experiences that complement your day at the market perfectly.
So our final thoughts? The Musgrave Market is not just a shopping destination; it’s a vibrant celebration of Durban’s diverse culture and community spirit. It embodies the Durban Vibe through its support of local artisans and performers, making it one of the best attractions in Durban. We always leave feeling inspired and connected to the creative heartbeat of our city.
